The Birchams - Population 550

Great Bircham has a Church of England Primary school. The King George VI School serves the village and its surrounding area including Bagthorpe and Bircham Newton. The school has links with the church and celebrates Christian Festivals throughout the year at the church, These festivals have included Harvest, Christingle, Carols and Mother’s Day.

The school has developed links with the community and the children have created Christmas cards for villagers and also delivered harvest food boxes. The school has held a Carols by Candlelight service which was well attended by villagers. The school takes part in many fundraising opportunities including Water Aid, collecting for the RSPCA and creating shoe boxes for the Samaritans Purse Appeal.

The Rector has traditionally been a member of the Governing Body and has made regular visits into school for collective worship and special occasions. The children attend The King George VI School from the ages of four to eleven, when they then transfer to high school in Hunstanton.

The King’s Head Hotel has recently been fully refurbished to a very high standard with a restaurant which has a high reputation. They are currently building a new accommodation block adjacent to the Hotel.

Bircham has a Post Office, a Farm shop selling produce sourced locally, offering a mixture of high quality fine food but also stocking useful everyday provisions. Next door there is an Art Gallery with new exhibitions each month. The Gallery is also available for hire for exhibitions, meetings, classes or sales events.

There is a Social Club with a large playing field plus a Bowling Green. The Club organises all of the village sports and has flourishing cricket and football teams. The football team is first in its division.

Bircham Windmill is a restored windmill still baking in the original bakery and selling a wide range of bread and cakes. They also have Cycle Hire, a Gift Shop and Tea Rooms offering homemade cakes and scones. They hold many specialty weekends throughout the summer.

Bircham has various trades people living in the village. They include a Blacksmith (his premises are at Docking) and a builder. Docking also runs an angling club; their small lake is in Bircham village. A mobile Library calls at the village once a month.

Apart from agriculture, the main source of employment is the Construction Industry Training Board (CITB) at Bircham Newtonn. They have been great supporters of the church.
